The Latest Golden Age of Sci-Fi & Fantasy is here
Hi.
Hello. Here’s another of my teeny weeny passages of thoughts I’m throwing out into the Big Wide Webworld while travelling around the Actualworld in 2025/2026 and currently in Queensland Australia in Cairns investigating the Great Barrier Reef whose conservation is crucial in giving future generations a beautiful and sustainable environment in which to thrive and exist.
When I was growing up what excited me most was the future, space travel, planets and stars and other worlds. I read lots of science fiction novels partly down to my friend Jan (hi Jan), including masterpieces by Arthur C Clarke, Larry Niven, Clifford Simak, A.E. Van Vogt and later mind boggling novels and short stories from Philip K Dick and some from Isaac Asimov.
I watched movies such as Forbidden Planet, The Day The Earth Stood Still, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and later all the Spielberg and Lucas classics, plus Philip K works turned into films Total Recall and Blade Runner. I watched glued to our 19” black and white set Doctor Who, Out of the Unknown, Star Trek and all that followed.
One day maybe my favourite novels The City and The Stars, Childhood’s End by Arthur C Clarke and Destiny Doll and Ringworld, will be filmed as well as a grown up version of A Scanner Darkly.
Even the Superman and Batman films have their brilliant moments though I certainly admit to being a DC Comics kid, but not a Marvel one so the plethora of Marvel filmed output is not my cuppa TBH.
In the past few years however the technology to film some of these great works and come up with new ones too is most definitely here. People who know me as an Apple Bore/Geek (I’ve used their computers to make my music career happen and now iPhones and iPads plus AirPods and MacBooks are truly essential in my life) may however be surprised to hear that I think AppleTV is the finest example of making this Golden Age of Sci-fi come into being.
Every AppleTV Sci-fi oriented series I believe Looks Sounds and is Written beautifully with imagination emotion and heartfelt passion for the subject. I adore Foundation, Silo, For All Mankind, Constellation, Amazing Stories, Dark Matter, Severance, and now Pluribus …..
AND OF COURSE, Netflix is seriously responsible for playing its part in this Golden Age as I see it with the most superb series such as Black Mirror, Stranger Things, Away, The Umbrella Academy, Dead Boy Detectives (thanks Andy and Neil!) and numerous more including Feature Films. Amazon Prime weigh in with The Rings things (forgot to mention those earlier, sorry Mr Jackson) plus the Twilight stuff plus the Hunger Games movies, all yes ALL of which have contributed to the production of superb Sci-fi and Fantasy content now.
ANYWAY, I’m just spouting forth here as another of an occasional series subtitled Who The Hell Cares What I Think.
If any of the above appeals, dip your toe in and enjoy.
